As we roll the closing credits on this year, we’d like to reflect on the many moments of beauty contained within a year that was often marred with uncertainty. So darling, pour yourself a glass of champagne, put on those rose-colored glasses and let’s reminisce.

2021 commenced with high hopes and budding excitement for the re-opening of California. Sure, we had to wait almost half of the year to get to that point, but we took full advantage of all that La La land had to offer while we waited. With the gorgeous Los Angeles weather we spent a lot of time outdoors, we took a weekend trip to Santa Barbara, and took advantage of the plethora of California grown produce at our local, yet nationally-known farmers’ markets.

We spent countless hours sunbathing by the saltwater pool, ordering takeout from our local Franklin Village restaurants, sipping on cocktails on the rooftop while the sunset illuminated the Hollywood sign. When the city opened up and we were able to, we gathered, and drank rose, or coffee, caught a film or took in an art viewing, and even reveled in weekend piano concertos in the lobby.

As we gathered for Thanksgiving we paid tribute to our frontline workers, and specifically our everyday heroes, the firefighters of Station 82 with catered lunch. We cannot express how vital their role is that they play in our community and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts.

With all that this past year had to offer, our guests, staff and vendors are the shining stars in this story. Without you, our halls would be silent and the pages blank. We are so grateful for your presence and thankful for your stay. Ready to join us at Villa Carlotta in 2022? Please don’t hesitate to give us a ring at 213.463.5137 or email [email protected] if we can assist you in the writing of next year’s great story.

Louella Parsons – a name both feared and revered in Hollywood. Just a few lines typed out on a typewriter could end someone’s career. Accurate or fabricated, neither mattered. What Parsons wrote stood as fact. Yet how was it that this once “nobody columnist” came to be a gossip column tycoon? It’s a story made for Hollywood (and Villa Carlotta) history.

It was said that Parson’s rose to infamy due to her perfect timing, but we’ll get to that later. Her story begins at the Chicago Tribune where she created the first movie column in the country. It was here that fate took its turn. William Randolph Hearst acquired the newspaper and Parsons found herself out of a job. She moved to New York and began a similar column. She received Hearst’s attention by writing an encouraging review of his mistress Marion Davies. Shortly after, Hearst commissioned Parsons to write for the New York American.

Wildly speculated, it was the scandal that Parson’s didn’t write about that some said earned her the claim to fame and the unbridled power of the Hearst empire behind her. Parsons’ flattering piece about Ms. Davies earned her friendship and an invitation on Hearst’s yacht for Labor Day in 1924. At some point in the evening another guest on Hearst’s yacht, director Thomas Ince, was shot and mortally wounded.

The rumors say Ince was shot by Hearst himself, though the bullet was possibly intended for Charlie Chaplin. Newspapers reported Ince was not on the yacht, but instead passed from heart failure in his home. Parsons also denied attendance. Whatever happened on that USS Oneida that fateful day it most likely catapulted her to gossip column fame, as she later became Hearst’s lead gossip columnist.

Louella Parsons and the unwritten scandal have ties to Villa Carlotta.  Not only was Louella Parson’s one of the famous inhabitants of Villa Carlotta, the building itself was once owned by the Elinor Ince, widow of Thomas Ince. It is speculated that the newspaper magnate financed the construction of the building as a “grief payment.” Scandalous, intriguing and (mostly) true – the exact events we’ll never know, but this story is one for the Hollywood history books.

As most cities do, Hollywood came from humble beginnings, starting as a small adobe house on the edge of Los Angeles in 1853. What is now synonymous with glitz and glamour was once a successful agricultural community.

It is said that the name “Hollywood” came from Daeida Wilcox, wife of real estate tycoon Harvey Henderson Wilcox, who heard about a town in Ohio of the same name. She loved the moniker so much that she named her ranch after the fabled town. It stuck and the rest became Hollywood history.

Movies didn’t make their debut in Los Angeles until the early 1900s. The 1910 short filmIn Old California, was the first movie made entirely in Los Angeles. Sunset Boulevard became home to the first motion picture studio in 1911. Hollywood swiftly became the idyllic spot for movie producers trying to escape Thomas Edison’s movie production patents. The climate was also much more favorable than the harsh seasons of the East coast while the landscape provided the perfect backdrop.

By 1920, the Golden Age of Hollywood had arrived, bringing with it a certain sense of prestige and fame. The introduction of sound in the 1920s revolutionized the moviemaking industry. The Golden Age reached its peak in the 1930s. Even through the Great Depression, people flocked to movie theaters for a moment of joy and respite. An estimated 80 million people went to the movies each week.

The Golden Age of Hollywood is the era most remembered. Glitz, glam, fame, notoriety and sordid affairs mingled together to create an illustrious illusion. Many traveled far and wide for fame and to stake their claim in Tinseltown. Most ran out of money, but the ones who made it were larger than life.

They say legends never die, and in Hollywood they are forever immortalized on the silver screen. The Hollywood Hills stand as a testament to the first legendary stars and starlets. Here at the Villa Carlotta their energy lives on. Can you feel it?

With summer in full swing and the world reopening, we’re all feeling a bout of cabin fever. What better way to enjoy the fruits of a Southern California summer than a day trip to one of Villa Carlotta’s gorgeous neighboring cities! There’s a vast array of possibilities in our region for an entertaining way to spend a day. Our favorite? Santa Barbara!

GETTING THERE | Hop in your car and take a drive up the 101, or take a look at the train schedule for an easy day-trip up the Santa Barbara coastline. Just north of downtown, LA’s Union Station offers travelers an alternative transportation option, with trains that leave periodically throughout the day. Ticket prices for the scenic trip north floating around $30. If the train isn’t your speed, hop in the car and cue up your favorite road trip mix for a drive up the Pacific Coast Highway. Why not as speedy as taking the 101, the PCH provides a more scenic route, peppered with lovely spots to stop along the way such as the Getty Villa, Malibu and Carpinteria.

THE FUNK ZONE | Downtown Santa Barbara, a.k.a “The Funk Zone” is the main drag on State Street, stretching a few blocks between the ocean and Highway 101. Conveniently adjacent to the Amtrak Train Station, the Funk Zone district speaks to Santa Barbara’s contemporary side, offering a variety of boutique tasting rooms, cafes, galleries and shops for a charming stroll in Santa Barbara proper.

URBAN WINE TRAIL | Reserve tickets of the Urban Wine Trail experience, spanning six neighborhoods including the Funk Zone, Presidio, Midtown, La Arcada, Goleta and Summerland. With 24 wineries to experience, we understand if you can’t make it to all of them. If we had to choose, we’d send you over to Deep Sea Wine to take in 360-degree views of the Pacific Ocean, Channel Islands and Riviera.

BEACHES | What’s a trip to Santa Barbara without some much-needed beach time? There are plenty of gorgeous beach options we love, like Butterfly BeachEast Beach and Arroyo Beach. Bring a beach blanket and some snacks for some sea-sprayed down time in this charming corner of the SoCal coast.

BOTANIC GARDEN | Check out 10 different communities of California-native plants at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden! Open every day from 10am-6pm, the garden offers a Japanese tea shop and garden-style gift shop. Tickets are just $16 for adults and $8 for children.

HISTORY | Santa Barbara is rich in history. Plan to take self-guided interior and exterior tours of the Santa Barbara Courthouse, built in 1939 and still in operation today. Pop into the Santa Barbara Old Mission House and Park, also known as the “Queen of the Missions,” for a dose of California history. We also recommend visiting some exhibits at Santa Barbara’s Museum of Natural History, located on the historic Stearns Wharf.

To top off your day of adventures, travel back to Villa Carlotta and unwind with some of our perks. Take a dip in our heated saltwater pool or pop open one of your new bottles of Santa Barbara wine and enjoy some rooftop views.

One day not enough? There are tons of Airbnb’s and hotels in the area that are perfect to extend your day-trip into a weekend staycation. We love being neighbors with special places like Santa Barbara. We can’t wait to hear the stories you bring back with you. Start your journey, book your extended stay at Villa Carlotta today!  213.640.5559
